- This facility is the first power plant based on liquefied natural gas in Central America
CEMEX, S.A.B. de C.V. (“CEMEX”) (NYSE: CX) announced today that its subsidiary CEMEX Latam Holdings, S.A. ("CLH") (BVC: CLH) is participating in the construction of the first power plant based on liquefied natural gas in Panama and Central America. For this project, CEMEX expects to supply approximately 46,000 cubic meters of specialized concretes, including 26,000 cubic meters of cryogenic concrete and 12,000 cubic meters of low-heat hydration concrete. To date, CEMEX has supplied 83% of the required concrete.
This project, led by AES, is designed to diversify Panama’s energy supply and make the country a liquefied natural gas (LNG) distribution hub for the region. CEMEX participated in the construction of this facility in partnership with Hormigón Express, a Panamanian company.
Managed by POSCO Engineering & Construction, the project consists of two phases which call for special concretes adapted to their specific construction needs. The first phase comprises the construction of the foundation slab of the tank that will store the LNG and requires 12,000 cubic meters of low-heat hydration concrete.
For the second phase, which involves the construction of the tank coating and requires 26,000 cubic meters of concrete, CEMEX will supply cryogenic concrete. Designed by European laboratories, this specialized concrete is adapted to withstand temperatures as low as -195°C an hour thanks to the utilization of third generation admixtures from CEMEX’s Admixtures unit to meet the demanding technical requirements of this state-of-the-art facility.
“We are proud to participate in a project that offers the potential to bring great benefits to the energy sector. Likewise, we are pleased to work hand in hand with our clients through strategic alliances in order to serve projects that promote this great country’s growth,” said Andres Jimenez, President of CEMEX Panama. “This type of construction reaffirms CEMEX’s commitment to the sustainable development of Panama and the Central American region.”
CEMEX Panama and CEMEX Research Group AG designed the specialized concretes required for this project. CEMEX’s cement and ready-mix technology centers are part of the R&D collaboration network, headed by CEMEX Research Group AG in Switzerland.
