CEMEX, S.A.B. de C.V. (“CEMEX”) (NYSE: CX) announced today that it received the Sello Verde de Verdad (True Green Label), granted by the Colombian company Ecologic S.A.S., and the certification of neutralization of greenhouse gas emissions linked to transport activities in Colombia, issued by the Colombian Institute of Technical Standards and Certification (ICONTEC Internacional). This certification makes CEMEX the first company in the country with carbon neutral certification on its entire vehicle fleet.
Through this certification, CEMEX joins Colombia’s and other 190 countries’ commitment at the 2015 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, celebrated in Paris.
“We are proud to say that CEMEX’s fleet in Colombia is now the first carbon neutral certified fleet in the country. The private sector is key to fighting the effects of climate change, and thus, we are implementing several actions on multiple fronts that will enable us to contribute to this goal,” said Ricardo Naya, President of CEMEX Colombia. “This certification further demonstrates our effort, commitment, and responsibility to the environment and encourages us to continue our initiatives that will help improve the quality of life under a sustainable development model. At CEMEX, we are building a better future.”
The Sello Verde de Verdad certification guarantees that the approximately 1,000 vehicles that comprise CEMEX Colombia’s total fleet are carbon-neutral thanks to the offset of emissions through the CO2CERO forestry project. Through this project, CEMEX is committed to plant and maintain approximately 480,000 trees in Orinoquia, a post-conflict zone and one of Colombia’s six natural regions. With more than 400 hectares from which the emissions offset will be achieved, this forestry project will not only capture around 120,000 tons of CO2, but also protect the region’s native forests.
CEMEX received the certification in a ceremony attended by Luis Gilberto Molina, Colombia’s Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, and German Cardona, Colombia’s Minister of Transport.
