Biodiversity Conservation
Biodiversity is fundamental to the well-being of life on earth and to the proper functioning of the ecosystems that provide essential goods and services to people, businesses, and economies worldwide.
At CEMEX, we are constantly working to protect biodiversity and maximize our contribution to nature conservation. We do this by minimizing the environmental impacts of our operations, such as habitat degradation, species alteration, changes in groundwater levels, discharges to water bodies, and dust emissions.
Our commitment to the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) sustainability guidelines helps to underscore the importance of this objective. We will continue to improve our biodiversity management by integrating the proposed best practices throughout our operations.
In addition, we have collaborated with organizations such as BirdLife International and the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC), which engage employees and local communities in wildlife enhancement initiatives and foster opportunities for coexistence between our industry and natural habitats.
Preserving El Carmen Nature Reserve
Since 2001, we have been preserving nature and sharing its wonders through El Carmen Nature Reserve, a private transboundary conservation area in Mexico and the United States owned and managed by CEMEX and other private landowners.
It has 140,356 hectares (a size similar to Mexico City or Houston) and five different ecosystems that are home to a large number of plants, birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibian species. This space is eight times larger than the amount of area that CEMEX has dedicated to its operations worldwide.
Conservation & Nature Book Series
Since 1993, we have had the privilege of working with the most prestigious conservation organizations to publish books that convey the need to preserve our environment. This is part of our commitment to promote among our stakeholders a culture of awareness about biodiversity conservation and climate change.
Each year we publish a new book with strategies and approaches for protecting the natural world, including powerful images from the world's best nature photographers. These books have been distributed throughout the public, private and university sectors.
The CEMEX Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) Standard
Developed in collaboration with BirdLife International, the CEMEX Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) is our Corporate Guideline on biodiversity management. This plan helps us to identify, assess, and conserve or enhance biodiversity, focusing on conservation actions in wildlife or within the context of CEMEX sites.
In addition, the BAP promotes the development of collaborative partnerships regardless of location, proximity to areas of high ecological value, or experience in biodiversity management.
Preserving Land, Biodiversity, and Ecosystem Services
As part of our 2030 Sustainability Plan, we aim to achieve 100% rehabilitation plans for our active quarries at more than 240 sites.
We will continue with the implementation of the BAP in quarries classified with high biodiversity value and we will promote Third Party Certification in quarries with high risk sites according to an environmental and social assessment.
